One day, Zeus decided to assume mortal form and walk among the Greeks to see what they were up to.

In the evening, he came to a small shrine to which was tended by an old, devout couple.  Even though they were poor, they set the table with their best food and served him as best they could because he was a guest.

The next morning, Zeus revealed himself to them and granted them a wish in return for their hospitality.

After discussing it, they asked that, when it came time for them to die, they would die together at the same moment so neither one would have to live without the other.  Zeus gladly granted this boon and left feeling happy that there were at least some good people on the Earth.

The couple spent many more happy years tending the shrine.

One day, while they were standing, holding hands in front of the shrine, they felt that their time had come.  As they looked into each other's eyes for the last time, they were transformed into a pair of oak trees, side by side, with their branches forever intertwined.
